.....July 2nd 2010

I was in the kitchen making a cheese sarnie. Because it was warm the back door was open. I heard a clicky sound and turned ‘round to see a really cute terrier-type dog sat looking at me with his head on one side. He’d just walked in and it seemed like he fancied a slice of nice English cheddar.

First I went outside to see if I could spot any dog walkers missing one half of the partnership but there wasn’t a sign of anyone. Then I gave the visitor a drink of water in a little bowl while I checked the identity tag on hiscollar. On it was stamped ‘Humphrey’ followed by a mobile number.

I gave the number a call and spoke to one very relieved and apologetic guy from a couple of streets away who said Humphrey had escaped because his housemate had forgotten to close the gate. Ten minutes later, Humprey’s owner arrived to collect his pet. We chatted for a while and he mentioned he was quite glad the housemate was due to leave soon because he was pretty inconsiderate. At this point it felt like fate had stepped in…on four legs!!
